ST. HELENA, CA—I frequently visit Whitehall Lane Winery in the heart of Napa Valley. It's a perennial favorite. Their wines are highly regarded and I have always found a friendly vibe here.
The other day I selected 4 wines out of 7 from their current release tasting menu. Fee: $15. Below are the wines that I tasted. ALL 4 were very good—
2014 Sauvignon Blanc Napa Valley
I enjoyed the citrus finish. A medium-dry wine. 70% of the fruit was fermented in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks and 30% in new French oak barrels. 9% Semillon was blended in for enhanced sweet, round flavors and mouth-feel. Retail: *$18.00 (*An excellent value!)
2014 Chardonnay, Carneros
Light oak. Very nice and airy. This wine was barrel fermented in 75% French Burgundian oak and 25% stainless steel and aged on the lees for just under 11 months. About two-thirds of the wine was put through malolactic fermentation to enhance the body and mouth-feel. Retail: $28
2014 Pinot Noir, Las Brisas Vineyard, Carneros
Beautifully balanced. Cherry, strawberry, and black currant flavors and aromas. Retail: $48
2012 Leonardini Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley (formerly called Reserve Cabernet)
Fantastic! A blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot that was handpicked from select blocks of Whitehall Lane's Estate Vineyards. Long, silky finish. Retail: $85
Whitehall Lane Winery is featured in the 7th Edition of The California Directory of Fine Wineries, (Wine House Press, Sonoma, California).
